Nintendo Cut 3DS price by $80!

Tej Kohli IT blog shares a happy news for the Nintendo fans. The company has slashed the price of its 3DS handheld by $80 in order to attract more buyers. Read the complete report at Tej Kohli blog:

Nintendo has reduced the price of their 3DS by $80 with an intent of sparking interest in the slow moving device. According to the announcement by the company, the price of 3DS dropped from $249.99 to $169.99 from 12 August onwards.

"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in a statement.

The company confesses that the hand-held has experienced a sluggish start since its launch in March. The slow 3DS sales and the imminent price cut helped propel a fall in year over year net sales at Nintendo.

Nintendo has sold more than 4.32 million 3DS devices since its launch in Japan in February. Of these, about 830,000 were bought in the US alone.

Besides the drop in prices, the company has announced to offer 20 free to download games to "anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11."

All those people will be enrolled for a 3DS Ambassadors program, permitting them to download 10 NES Virtual Console games including Super Mario Bros., the Legend of Zelda and many more, plus 10 Game Boy Advance titles at no cost. The NES games will be available September 1, and GBA games sometime later this year.

iPad Sucked 11% Share of the PC Market!

The IT passion blog by Tej Kohli is a place to find the latest news on Technology sector. In this post, Tej Kohli talks about how the new player iPad ate up the 11% share of the PC market.

From 7 percent market share in January, the iPad now stands at 11 percent.

The gadget was launched only a year ago, and during this quarter Apple sold about 9.25 million iPads which marks a 142% increase from the last year sales.

According to a recent research, the personal computer sales worldwide, excluding tablets were 844 million this quarter. This indicates a 2 percent growth from the last year.

If we look at it from another perspective, lets say that most iPads were sold to users, and that total computer sales are divided equally between consumers and businesses. Going by this, the iPad has already grabbed the 20 percent share of consumer PC market.

Looking at it from yet another perspective, if we put the biggest computer brands in a chronological order, the iPad comes fourth following HP, Dell, and Lenovo. It in fact comes before Acer, says Tej Kohli. Furthermore, if we add the Apple's 3.965 million Macs, it comes to a 13.2 million PCs which it sold, making the second largest computer vendor globally after HP.

The iPad entered the scene only about a year ago, but the PCs have been around since 1980s, with Microsoft's Windows dominating the most of them. During the early 1990s when the MACs were thrown in the market, things changed a little.

Microsoft reports its quarterly earnings on Thursday and expects it to be good this time. Office has been doing well for the last three quarters, and related business server software is also a strong point. But Windows sales reduced by 4% year over year last quarter, and nobody expects that trend to be reversed this quarter. Part of the Windows revenue decline is from strong year-ago numbers thanks to the release of Windows 7, and part of it is the decay of netbooks.

But on a serious note -- a new player just took 11% of what used to be the PC market. Microsoft's Windows monopoly, seems in danger.

Photo Sharing on Twitter by Next Week - Reports

Tej Kohli IT blog is the repository of technology news and updates.

Following the league of other social networking sites, micro blogging site Twitter could be planning to introduce its own photo upload and sharing service this week. Tej Kohli found many reports circulating on the web about the same.

According to various reports, the company's CEO, Dick Costolo, is expected to make the announcement at the D9 conference in California.

The service is expected to be based on twimg.com, acquired by Twitter last July. It would compete with the likes of Twitpic, Instagram and Yfrog, and could be monetized by the means of advertising.

There's a strong chance, however, that the step could offend third party developers - already unhappy about the way Twitter has encroached on their space.

Back in March, platform lead Ryan Sarver warned third party developers off creating Twitter clients. He told the company's developer forum: "Developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience. The answer is no."

But with rival photo sharing services having been around long before that announcement, any competing launch from Twitter itself is likely to leave the likes of Twitpic somewhat aggrieved.

Twitter says the reason for the crackdown is that it wants to give users a more consistent experience. Last week, the company announced that it had bought the leading third-party client Tweetdeck for a reported $40 million.

Google Moves to Fix Android Leak!

While browsing the web Tej Kohli found this story about a flaw in Google's Android apps. Read on the complete story which Tej Kohli has shared here...

Google is working on fixing an issue with Android phones that could have leaked users' personal data.

It follows a warning from German security researchers that more than 99% of handsets were potentially leaking information. The flaw meant hackers could have gained access to data within the phones' calendar and contacts applications.

Such issues are likely to become more frequent, warned security experts.

Google said in a statement: "We're starting to roll out a fix which addresses a potential security flaw that could, under certain circumstances, allow a third party access to data available in calendar and contacts.

"This fix requires no action from users and will roll out globally over the next few days."

The vulnerability affected the login credentials for some applications.

The ID token that allows people to access the service without the need to keep logging could be intercepted by criminals if they were sent over unsecured wireless networks.

With this token, criminals would be able to pose as the user and get at their personal information.

Security experts have praised Google's quick response to the issue but warned that the huge range of Android smartphones on the market leaves Android devices open to security issues.

"Whereas Apple can issue a single iOS update to patch iPhones and iPads, things aren't so simple for Google's users," said Graham Cluley, a senior consultant for security firm Sophos.

He said users should upgrade to the latest version of Android and avoid using open wi-fi networks.

"Using 3G may eat into your data plan, but it is far less likely that your communications are being snooped upon," he said.

Tej Kohli IT passion blog brings you the latest developments in technology industry. After winning the hearts of millions of people worldwide, Apple and iPhone also scored big in the Guiness World Records.  Tej Kohli blog brings you the complete report.

A lot of mobile related items have found place in the Guinness World Records' new Gamer's Edition Book 2011. While Apple's iPhone 4 was named the fastest-selling portable gaming system, its App Store was declared the most popular application marketplace besides having had the largest launch line-up of a gaming system ever.

However, some non-apple favorites bagged a title as well such as Rovio's Angry Birds, which was listed for being the top-paid-for app in 'most nations'. TapTap Revenge was named the most popular iPhone game series and Plants vs.Zombies was named the fastest selling iPhone/iPod strategy game.

Tej Kohli says there certainly are many non-Apple or iPhone related items in the book, but for that you will have to buy a hard copy to fund out. Guinness has also launched a related Gamer's Edition Arcade App for iOS and Android that costs $0.99.

The Flexible PaperPhone, a Tej Kohli report

Tej Kohli shares another amazing news for the gadget lovers. Imagine a phone that can be folded like a paper and can be kept in stacks. Read the complete report at Tej Kohli blog.

As the world around us is shrinking continually, here's another addition to the list of tiny, sleek objects, but this one is seriously the mother of all gadgets – the PaperPhone, a flexible phone that can be controlled by being bent, written on or used as a touchscreen.

The device, which is built to find out how people use a flexible phone, is a joint innovation of researchers Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, Arizona State University, USA, researchers from the E-Ink Corporation.

“This is the future. Everything is going to look and feel like this within five years,” Roel Vertegaal, director of the human media lab at Queen’s, said. “This computer looks, feels and operates like a small sheet of interactive paper.”

This epaper, uses the same E-Ink technology used in the Amazon Kindle ereader. Tej Kohli is impressed with this phone, which is only a few millimeters thick, can make phone calls, read ebooks and even play music.

The researchers say that this technology could eventually mean the end of paper and printers. Dr Vertegaal said: “The paperless office is here. Everything can be stored digitally and you can place these computers on top of each other, just like a stack of paper.”

In this post Tej Kohli shares a good news for the Wii lovers.....read on!

Game afficonados of the world rejoice! Nintendo has announced to reduce the price of its Wii gaming console to $149 and also include a Mario game in the bouquet.

Industry soothsayers were expecting this price slash for quite sometime now. Priced at $169 previously, the price cut came after Nintendo announced to launch a successor to the Wii in the coming year.

A lot of analysts believed Nintendo needed to do something to revive the console, which was the undisputed leader in gaming consoles for quite sometime, but has lost its demand for the past several months.

In a recent release, Nintendo said that beginning may 15 consumers can purchase a Wii (black or white)
for the new price of $149. The range will feature the Mario Kart Wii and a Wii wheel accessory in the same color as console.

Sony may Compensate Users For Playstation Network Hacks

Tej Kohli brings a good news for the play-station users. Sony may give users some compensation for the disruption of the play station network and Qriocity online services, said the company's US unit. Read the complete report on Tej Kohli IT blog.

Both these networks were taken offline by Sony after it found out they had been hacked, and the personal information of its 77 million registered account holders had been stolen. The company also fears that the credit card numbers and other personal information could have been stolen too, but an ongoing investigation has revealed no evidence of that until now.

In the latest post on its Play Station blog, the company hinted towards offering compensation. Tej Kohli brings some excerpts:

"We are currently evaluating ways to show appreciation for your extraordinary patience as we work to get these services back online," it said.

Users get access to the PlayStation network free of cost, so the compensation (if it comes) is not likely to be monetary. Some users do subscribe to the PlayStation Plus service, which allows them to play beta versions of the games and other perks for an annual fee.

The blog posting also said subscribers to Sony Online Entertainment's MMO (massively multi-player online) games "DC Universe Online" and "Free Realms" would also see something from the company.

"To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events across our game portfolio," the blog said. "We are also working on a 'make good' plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms."

The latest blog posting didn't provide any updates as to the status of the PlayStation Network, the Qriocity service for consumer electronics devices, or an ongoing investigation into the hack.

It did say gamer trophies and game data files storied on Sony's servers will be available once the service is back online.

Yahoo Launches Google Instant Like Service, Search Direct

Tej Kohli IT blog brings you latest updates in the IT world. In a counter-attack to Google's Instant Search, Yahoo has come up with its own version of predictive search. Launched several months after Google Instant, Yahoo Search Direct will help searchers find answers (not just links) faster. Tej Kohli blog brings you the detailed report:

Yahoo unveiled Search Direct yesterday, a service that retrieves instant search results to compete with Google Instant predictive search technology.

Yahoo's new search feature will get users search results as they type characters in the search bar, even before they complete a query, hit the enter or visit a search results page, just like Google Instant does.

The objective is to shorten a few seconds from all search queries, enticing users to look up more and of course, see and click on more ads.

During the launch event, Yahoo officials touted the technique as a move to fetch users 'answers' rather than the typical blue links search engine customarily generate.

Right now the technology covers top trending searches, TV, movies, sports teams and players, weather, stocks, local, travel and shopping categories on Yahoo. Other features like popular music and local listings will also be added eventually. Presently in beta for American users only, the service will be available over the range of other Yahoo products and markets later in 2011 .

Direct Search shows the Yahoo's dedication to its users' search experience despite the fact that Bingo, Microsoft's search engine powers its search results under the 10-year contract signed August last year.

Yahoo takes 88 percent of Microsoft's search engine traffic ad sales to power its rival's search engine. However, Yahoo has complete control to experiment on the front end. Tej Kohli thinks that this new feature may help Yahoo reclaim its lost ground.

Google rolled out the real time, predictive search feature for internet users in September last year, which is an improved version of the Google suggest feature that guesses users' query as they begin to type it.

Early on, Instant appeared to boost Google's search market share, but the company has returned to its usual 65 percent search share range. Yahoo, meanwhile, is hovering around the 16 percent market and is losing share as Bing gains.

Zuckerberg's Facebook page hacked - Tej Kohli Report

Tej Kohli brings an interesting news from the web world. Accroding to recent new Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook fan page got hacked. Tej Kohli brings the entire report.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's fan page was hacked on Tuesday, a high profile invasion of privacy on a site that is often on the receiving end of public ire when it comes to the safety of people's private data.

The post that started as “Let the hacking begin” appeared on the Zuckerber's page right under his name. “If Facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a 'social business' the way Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus described it?” the post further said.

There were more than 1800 likes on the message before it was removed from the page. Nobody is available to comment from the Facebook

However, Zuckerberg wasn't the only high profile person to have his Facebook page hacked. A hacker posted a message on French President Nicolas Sarkozy's wall on Sunday that stated the president would not run for re-election.

Sarkozy responded with a post saying no system is infallible.

While Facebook is staying silent on the hack, the company posted a blog entry Wednesday morning titled: "A Continued Commitment to Security." It draws attention to Data Privacy Day Friday. The day is an international effort by governments and businesses to draw attention to personal-data protection issues.

Tej Kohli Talks About Google's Holiday Doodle

Thursday morning, Google released their holiday greeting doodle which consists of 17 individual interactive images replacing the letters of original Google logo. Tej Kohli gives a detailed overview of this new doodle and its significance.

On opening the Google's homepage today, you will see portraits of scenes around the world. If you click on the first image you are taken to a Google search on St. Basil's Cathedral in Russia and as you saunter through the digital photos, you will be taken on delightful journey to the Great Wall of China, the Sahara Desert, Venice Gondolas ending with “up on the housetop”, a secular Santa Song written by Benjamin Hanby in 1864. Tej Kohli found this doodle concept amazingly attractive and interesting.

Just like the Google September bouncing ball logo, Tej Kohli is speculating a secret hidden message in this logo as well. If you look at the logo carefully, you may notice the blocks roughly arranged to from the word Google. You may also notice that the order of portraits' colors are also in sync with the colors of letters in the original logo i.e. blue, red, yellow, blue green and red.

The logo has been designed by Michael Lopez who has been working on this year's holiday doodle since July, with other four artists who collectively took 250 hours to complete this logo.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal he said, "We want to end the year with a bang." and Tej Kohli thinks they have indeed done it.

The initial idea was to display the doodle in installments but then they decided that it would be best to out them all together. The logo will be on display till the Christmas.

Looking back at all the doodle's Google has released this year, it wouldn't be wrong to say that this indeed has has been a creative year. From birthdays, holidays and interactive video games, Google has left no stone unturned to reflect its creative streak. Let's see now what they have for the users in the year ahead.

Tej Kohli's this year favorite doodle was the Pacman game, what was yours?

Tej Kohli News - Its Android for Men and iOs for the Ladies, says a survey!

Tej Kohli came across survey which revealed some surprising things. If a recent study is to be believed, women are more likely to purchase an iPhone as their next smartphone, while men are more inclined to Android devices. Read this amazing piece of news at Tej Kohli Blog.

According to the data collected in October 2010, about 31 percent ladies said they would want to buy an Apple iOS device next, followed by 22.8 percent women who are interested in purchasing a Google Android Device. On the other hand, 32.6 percent of the men were more keen to buy an Android phone, while 28.6 percent longed for an iOS gadget.

As far as the market share is concerned, iPhones and Blackberrys are in a statistical dead heat with each claiming more than 27 percent of the smartphone OS pie. Android phones followed closely with 22 percent and Microsoft windows mobile with 14 percent. Symbian, Linux and Palm systems has a less than 8 percent of collective share.

But looking at the future, perhaps the strongest indicator is the classification of 'next desired smartphone purchase'. Most people votes for Android and iOS with 35 percent and 28 percent of the people checking those options. Merely 13 percent wanted their next smartphone to be RIM Blackberry, followed by windows mobile with 6 percent of the overall votes.

The most preferred choice in every age range, except 35 to 54 years old was Apple iOS. This aforesaid age group more people preferred upgrading to Android over iOS.

The survey also found out that 29.7 percent of the American cell phone users own a smartphone now. This is the highest recorded figure until now.

Two other different surveys conducted earlier this month said Android was installed in approximately 44 percent of the smartphones used in the US, followed by Apple and RIM. Another claimed Android was the fastest-growing OS in the smartphone market.

Tej Kohli Reviews the New Macbook Air by Apple

Tej Kohli says that the new Macbook Air has the feel of an iPad in the laptop casing.

Some of the most outstanding advantages of using apple iPad tablet are that it starts in a flash, resumes where you left off and has long battery life to keep you going for hours, and last but not the least it can do many things for which we use laptops.

But imagine an actual laptop with all these features. A laptop which can do all this more! And imagine if it was almost as portable and light weight as an iPad? Well, imagine no more because on Apple's new Macbook Air, you can do just that!

Launched only a week back and priced at a mere $999, Macbook Air is a visually stunning cousin of the iPad. Available in two sizes, the base model has an 11.6 inch screen and weighs only 2.3 pounds the larger model starts at $1,299 , features a 13.3 inch screen and weighs 2.9 pounds.

Tej Kohli has been testing the former model and finds that regardless of a few drawbacks, they do offer a more or less iPad like feel. Battery life is quite strong, and wakes up from the sleep almost instantly.

Like the previous Air range laptops, these are strikingly beautiful, sleek and light, but very strong aluminum laptops. They use Flash Chips instead of hard drives. Also, Apple has engineered these laptops, adding a longer “standby” period which only takes a few seconds.

While these are only the few of a many changes Apple plans to make its laptops act more like an iPad or iPhone, whilst maintaining their greater power and more traditional keyboards, touch-pads and mice, along with the ability to run conventional programs.

For example, Apple has announced to soon launch an “app store” for the Mac, which would enable easy search and downloading for Macs. Besides, it will also debut it next Mac OS, Lion, next summer, a sysm of apps icon screens, which you can flick through with a multitouch touchpad.

Under real life circumstances, the battery for 11 inch model lasted 4 hours and 43 minutes, against apple's claim of up to 5 hours. The the battery of 13-inch model lasted 6 hours and 13 minutes, versus Apple's claim of up to 7 hours.

Unlike many netbooks, the new Mac Air laptops have high screen resolution, thus enabling you to fit more material into a relatively small space.

However, if you are looking for some robust machines, the new Airs might not be your best choice. They use last generation Intel processors with only 3 gigabytes of memory in the base models and storage space is also well below typical hard-disk capacities. While the 11inch model has a meager 64 GB storage, the 13-inch models starts at 128 GB with higher end model offering just 256 GB of storage. What's more, you cannot expand your storage or memory once you've chosen your initial specifications.

Also, like its predecessors, these two don't have a DVD drive and an Ethernet port. However, apple sells and External drive for $79 and an Ethernet Adapter for $29, but his can raise your budget pretty much. It also lacks HDMI ports that enable users to connect their laptops to Televisions. Furthermore, the keyboards are not back lit, but they do have two USB ports instead of one in the older models.
In a nutshell, Apple has done a commendable job in making these new Macbooks similar to iPads without compromising on their ability to work like regular laptops.

Toshiba claims that its 3D technology, which is currently best-suited for small displays, provides "nine different perspectives of each single 2D frame." The company added that those perspectives are then "superimposed" by the viewer's brain "to create a three-dimensional impression of the image."

The 3D effect is available within a 40-degree area in front of the set, Toshiba said. According to the Associated Press, viewers must also sit two feet from the 12-inch LCD and three feet from the 20-inch LCD to view 3D content.

The new LCDs are "first step into the 3D future in the consumer home cinema market," Toshiba European marketing chief Sascha Lange said in a statement. "But it will take several years to develop larger 3D TVs without glasses with screen sizes of 40 inches and more at a yet reasonable price point."

The possibility of viewing 3D content sans glasses is something that many consumers will welcome, though.

Last month, a survey about 3D TVs showed that 30 percent of people don't like the need to wear special glasses to view 3D content.

Although Toshiba is trying to make its name in the glasses-free arena, the company is already a player in the 3D TV market. It currently sells the WX800 line of 3D TVs. Both the 46- and 55-inch models of the WX800 require glasses.

Toshiba's 20GL1 and 12GL1, which switch from 3D to 2D mode, are scheduled to be released in Japan later this year. They will retail for about $2,900 and $1,400, respectively. The company has not announced plans for availability outside of Japan.

Bing Surpasses Yahoo in Search!

Tej Kohli congratulates Bing on beating Yahoo! in the US internet search.

In round one of the battle of the search engines, “Bing” defeated “Yahoo”, marking a historic win!
Bing's bounce over Yahoo in the US search volume should not come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the horse race, but it is a iconic milestone for a small search engine whose major directive is to grab some of the Google's advertising pie.
Throwing Yahoo out of the way, Bing's dream of giving a real competition to Google becomes a little less far-fetched. Bing, together with windows Live and MSN now have 13.9 percent share of all search queries. While Yahoo's share fell to 13.1%, Google still rules the roost with whopping 65.1% share. However, by other metrics, Bing is still at the third position.
Eventually though, the competition is only interesting in the way it inspires competitors to come up with new features and services. The battle between Google and Bingo will play out in three venues:

Basic Search

The recent launch of Google Instant tool by Google, which shows and alters search results as you type, is one example of how search engines will try to trump one another in order to make themselves stand out. The ultimate search results are somewhat same when separated from their interfaces, but there no mistaking Google from the pack now. Whether bingo will follow the footsteps of Google or will do something innovative on its own, is yet to be seen!

Extra Features

It's a pain to use different search engines for different services, hence, it falls upon Google and Bingo to develop the most attractive all-encompassing service that include maps, images and other things apart from the traditional search. Of late, Google has strengthened its real-time search engine to pull better results from Facebook and Twitter. Likewise, Bing has introduced streaming music, games and movie information to its search results. Recently, Bing also updated its Maps to include Cab fare calculator and support for OpenStreetMap.

Mobile

Google has a strong foothold when it comes to mobile searches, since it's a default search engine for iPhone and of course Android. But Bing might get a boost with the launch of Windows Phone 7, along with the Bing's iphone and Android apps. Besides this, the compulsory use of Bing in the Verizon's latest Fascinate phone might not be received well by Google fans, but it will give Bing another helping hand, although forcibly.
